Here’s our step-by-step guide to switch telecom operator while retaining your existing mobile number.
Over the past few years, there has been a tremendous growth in the number of smartphone users in India. Thanks to free calling, roaming and affordable internet, it has now helped to connect the unconnected. With intense competition, telecom operators are now offering attractive tariff plans.

There are times where we are not pleased with our telecom operator. Be it because the other operator has better network or tariff plans that offer better value for money. Earlier, switching telecom operators required users to change number too, but that is not the case anymore, thanks to Mobile Number Portability (MNP). It allows you to switch operators while retaining your existing number. If you are looking forward to switch your operator, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to go about it.
How to port your mobile number to a different operator
Step One
To begin with, you’ll first need to generate an 8-digit Unique Porting Code (UPC). To do this, you’ll have to send a text message – PORT – and send it to 1900. So, for instance, if your mobile number is 9820098200, the message will be – PORT 9820098200.

Step Two
You will get an SMS from 1901 which will include the UPC code, and an expiry date. It could take anywhere between a day to seven days to get the code. And once you get the code, ensure that you get the porting done before the expiry date.
Step Three
If you have already linked your phone number with Aadhaar, all you need to do is carry your Aadhaar card number for eKYC verification. In case you don’t have an Aadhaar card, you need to carry your ID and address proof, and photographs.

Step Four
Head over to your telecom operator’s store with the porting code and required documents. You will need to fill up the mobile number porting form and give the porting code to new operator. (Do note, all your dues with the exiting operator need to be settled, else you won’t be able to port out.)
You will have to buy a new SIM card, choose between prepaid or postpaid connection, select the tariff plan, and you’re good to go. Once the old connection is deactivated, you’ll need to enter the new SIM card in your phone, and now you will be latched on to the new operator. Also, do note that once you have ported to one operator, and you don’t like the service, you cannot port to a different operator for 90 days.
